Altea
Situated ten miles from Benidorm, Altea is an old, unique Spanish town with a superb Blue Flag beach, a wide choice of shops, bars, restaurants and a stunning marina.
The Moors named it Altaya, meaning "health for all", but not before they had destroyed the first settlement and rebuilt the town.
Altea is one of Spain's most memorable and tranquil towns and a careful development policy helps to keep it that way. There is a delightful seaside market held on Tuesdays – a welcome and colourful change from supermarket gastronomy.
The 257 steps that climb steeply above the main shopping street, the Avenida Fermin Sanz Orrio, lead to the old village. Here the streets are almost always full of people, who congregate in local bars and restaurants.
Altea boasts a number of art galleries and an artists’ colony well known in the region.
On Sundays and fiestas, during the afternoon, traditional games of pelota are played in the narrow streets near Alteas’ church square. Pelota – players strike the ball with their bare hands against walls, doors and windows, the windows are protected by grilles.
The best of the local beaches, most of which are pebbly, are south of at Albir, which is between Altea and the Sierra Helada.
