Villaricos
Villaricos is a simple fishing village, perched precariously between the Sierra Almagrera and the sea and flanked by the Almanzora river.
Once a great Phoenician port, forgotten by history for thousands of years, it resurfaced as a mining boom town in the 19th century before becoming the pleasant fishing village of today, with a special identity all of its own.
The real charm of Villaricos lies in its old fashioned simplicity and warmth of spirit and it is this lack if pretension that attracts you. The last lost corner of Mediterranean Spain
There is a fine sandy beach with a pleasant beach bar and the village itself has six restaurants, with excellent seafood and fine food cooked in the traditional Spanish style. There are also four or five bars and cafes including a late night watering hole and a village disco. There are a handful of shops including two mini markets.
The clear, clean and invigorating air; the dry warm climate and vast open vistas across the Almanzora valley to the sea and mountains beyond, offer an outdoor lifestyle unparalleled in Europe. The unhurried rhythm of local life, its celebrations and sociability, laughter and natural foods that accompany them, the wines, hams, cheese, fish, salads and olives, cleanse the body and mind.
The sheer beauty of the dramatic and rugged countryside, the golden evening light and the vast sparkling night sky add a sensation of timelessness and space – it feels, and indeed it is, different – a place apart.
