Cuevas del Almanzora

Set in a valley of orange and lemon groves the town has grown up around the imposing 7th Century Visigoth Castle which dominates the fertile plain of the river Almanzora. The gypsy barrio in the hills behind

the castle are renowned for the most impressive occupied cave dwellings in Andalucia.

A predominantly agricultural town, with a large commercial section the views from the rocky headlands are spectacular

The cave dwelling quarter deserves a visit, and there are many grand old houses, remains of a past era of prosperity, mainly due to the mining activity during the last century.

In the well laid out old part of town there are many examples of its past economic splendour and nobility, which were due to the exploitation of the Sierra Almagrera mines Cuevas del Almanzora is a short distance from Palomares village and Villaricos port and marina, fishing boats continue to run in and out of the bay, and is close to the

various new golf developments in the region. There are good roads connecting Cuevas to Vera Playa and other towns on the Costa de Almeria.
